Karlovy Vary: presentation of the jury of the Europa Cinemas Label
Karlovy Vary (29th June -7th July 2018)
Four Network exhibitors from Latvia, The Netherlands, Hungary and Germany will take part in the Europa Cinemas Label Jury on the occasion of the upcoming International Film Festival of Karlovy Vary in Czech Republic. The Jury members will award one film among the 13 European films competing in both the Official Competition and East of the West Competition.
Daira Āboliņa (Splendid Palace, Riga, Latvia)
Daira Āboliņa is Film critic, Head of Latvian FIPRESCI, MA in journalism (University of Latvia), MA in film theory (All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography, VGIK). Since the 90s, she produces programmes on cinema in Latvia and abroad for Latvian Television. She is a scriptwriter and script editor of documentaries produced by Latvian Television. Former expert of the Latvian Culture Capital Foundation and the Latvian National Film Centre; she has participated at international juries in Venice, Leipzig and Moscow. Daira is a member of European Film Academy and programme curator of the cinema Splendid Palace in Riga.
Simon Blaas (Cinema Middelburg, Middelburg, The Netherlands)
Simon Blaas was born in 1976 in Vlissingen, and now lives with his wife and two kids in Middelburg. In Utrecht, he studied literature. Simon used to work as a volunteer at the cinema in Middelburg, and in 2011 became managing and artistic director. In 2013, the cinema moved to the most beautiful building in town, a historic monument dating from 1607. It has a wonderful atmosphere. They screen arthouse movies with a focus on European films.
Balázs Kalmanovits (Art+ Cinema, Budapest, Hungary)
Balázs Kalmanovits was born in 1977, in Budapest. He is married with three children. He graduated from the University of Pécs in cultural management and film studies as specialisation. He has been working in cinema since 1996. Balázs managed the Mammut Cinema (Budapest) for three years, and Puskin Art Cinema (Budapest) for 10 years. He then managed four art cinemas at the same time for a year. He is now the ART+ CINEMA (Budapest) manager. He organized many festivals, premieres, film weeks and was the programing manager too. Balázs had an experience as jury member in Sarajevo and Miskolc.
Jan Makosch (Yorck Kino, Berlin, Germany)
Jan Makosch is working as a cinema manager for the Babylon Kreuzberg in Berlin. The cinema is part of the Yorck Cinema Group who runs 14 cinemas all over Berlin. Jan studied philosophy and started to work as a projectionist in analog times in Hamburg. Since then, he also worked for CICAE for the Art Cinema = Action + Management training in Venice. Furthermore, he is responsible for the alternative content in the Yorck Cinema Group.
