Emilie Blichfeldt's wonderfully demented debut feature, The Ugly Stepsister (Den stygge stesøsteren), was an electrifying experience for a Berlinale audience and found fans in each member of the Europa Cinemas Label Jury. It's Cinderella meets The Substance - a gory, subversive, refreshing take on the Grimm Brothers classic fairytale. After the sudden death of her stepfather, Elvira sets out to marry into royalty to secure her family's future. Her crush on the handsome Prince Julian drives her to undergo a series of extreme body modifications in a desperate bid to win his heart. Things get complicated for Elvira by way of a tapeworm, shoes sizes and her beautiful stepsister, Agnes. A striking feature debut and not for the faint-hearted. The Ugly Stepsister continues the run of superb big screen body horror features in the last few years and establishes Blichfeldt as a director to watch.
