CINEMA WITHOUT BARRIERS – SLOVENIA is a project dedicated to making cinema accessible to the deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind, and visually impaired Slovenian communities. Its primary goal is to provide inclusive cinematic experiences by ensuring that films are equipped with Slovenian sign language interpretation, audio descriptions, and subtitles. The project also aims to expand accessible screenings beyond major cities, reaching rural areas and smaller towns.
A key part of the initiative is training cinema professionals on accessibility tools and inclusive communication. In addition, the project will establish a national database of adapted films, ensuring a long-term impact on film accessibility in Slovenia. A national conference on film accessibility and inclusion will also be organized to foster knowledge-sharing and collaboration among stakeholders.
To measure success, the project has set objectives, including hosting 30 screenings of European films and 30 screenings of Slovenian films with accessibility features. Additionally, 10 European films and 10 Slovenian films will be adapted with sign language interpretation, audio descriptions, and subtitles. The project will culminate in an international conference on inclusive cinema and the publication of a best-practices handbook.
Implementation will start with research and development in the first phase, where accessibility associations will be consulted, and films will be selected for adaptation. The second phase will focus on staff training and equipping cinemas with the necessary technology. The final phase will see the rollout of screenings, discussions, and the conference, aiming at a lasting impact on inclusive cinema in Slovenia. This project is an adaptation of the successful Polish edition of « Cinema Without Barriers », supported by Collaborate to Innovate in 2023.
