Interview with Marta Fernandes

Cinema Ideal, Lisboa

09/05/2020

In a series of interviews with the exhibitors on its Validation Committee, Europa Cinemas takes stock of the situation facing independent exhibitors across Europe during this time of crisis.

Interview with Marta Fernandes

1 – First of all, how are you?

Fine, thank you

2 – How are you managing this unprecedented situation from a professional point of view? Are you working at the moment? Do you have any income?

The cinema staff is at home. The state is contributing a small proportion of their salary, the company is still paying the rest.

Since 13 March, when we decided to close the Cinema Ideal, we have had no money coming in, but we still have most of our financial outgoings, which is of course very worrying.

3 – Are there any projects that you have found useful for keeping your activity going? What have you been able to set up? Do these initiatives change your core activity in any way?

We have continued with our presence on social media, sharing photographs of the cinema and other posts, articles about the challenges theatres are facing and how certain VIPs or authorities have already registered their intention to provide support. These posts give rise to a fair amount of interaction with followers, showing that the cinema has a loyal audience, who are missing going to the movies and clearly intend to return. They need motivation and encouragement to keep going.

With its doors closed, the cinema is unable to fulfil its primary purpose which is to show the best of world cinema. Anything else we do is going to fall short of this, but we decided to “open the doors” with an online screening. We are promoting a free online screening of a documentary about Portuguese Fado singer Aldina Duarte, not only because she’s an enthusiastic filmgoer and a friend of the Cinema Ideal, but also because she chose our cinema for the launch of her latest album.

Also, although this does not mean a return to the cinema, we are encouraging people to watch and hire films from the online tv videoclub and on the Filmin platform, because this is vital for the survival of the independent distributors who premiere their films at the Cinema Ideal. We are also considering the possibility of creating a VOD platform to show some of the films that have premiered at the Ideal. When the cinema reopens this would be complementary to our programme, giving it a boost.

4 – Do you think these new activities might continue after the pandemic is over? Are there going to be new rules for cinemas, new ways of doing things?

Yes, the platform we are thinking of setting up may come to supplement future screenings at our cinema.

Above all, we have to realise that reopening will not mean a “return to normality”. There will be many months in which people’s relationship to their environment will go through significant changes. Right now, there’s been a complete change in cultural consumption, from taking place in the public arena and in showrooms to happening in people’s homes. But we think that so long as people’s safety can be guaranteed, they will want to come back and enjoy these activities together.

5 – What has been the response of the Portuguese State and regional institutions in helping movie theatres?

In Portugal there has been no measure announced to date by the Instituto do Cinema or other local bodies for specific support for cinemas, despite all the efforts made in this regard.

6 – What are your greatest concerns for the coming months? What do you think will happen when you’re allowed to reopen? In your relationship with your audiences, are you fearful or quite optimistic?

We will be faced with a series of challenges when reopening the cinema. First of all, what conditions will need to be in place to allow reopening? These have not yet been announced, even though the Government has already stated its intention to begin planning the reopening of theatres with numbered seating. There will have to be strict limits on the number of seats. There will probably also have to be a longer interval between screenings to reduce audience interaction. There will also need to be hygiene facilities in place to guarantee health protection for both cinema staff and audiences.

On the other hand, we are particularly concerned about people’s confidence to return to the cinema and be in groups after all this time of confinement, especially since a significant proportion of our audiences are in the older age bracket and are therefore among the groups at greatest risk.

When it comes to programme scheduling, this will also be an enormous challenge because premieres, films and events will have backed up. There will be films that premiered just before the cinemas were closed down and in some cases it makes perfect sense to show them again to give them their run in the cinema. Then there are all the premieres that were scheduled for this period of lockdown and the festivals that postponed their dates.

We hope to survive this crisis and we are certain that we will reopen with the best possible programme and that we will continue to count on our loyal cinemagoers. We believe, as we have stated on our cinema doors, that “vai ficar tudo bem” (all will be well).

Entrevista Marta Fernandes

Cinema Ideal, Lisboa

1 - Antes de tudo, como está?

Bem, obrigada.
