Collaborate to Innovate 2023
Call for Applications 2023 has been launched
Europa Cinemas is pleased to inform you that the Call for applications of COLLABORATE TO INNOVATE 2023 is now open. The deadline to submit your application is Tuesday 28th February, 2023 (7:00pm CET).
Initiated by Europa Cinemas with the support of Creative Europe/MEDIA in 2021, this new flagship scheme aims to reward outstanding innovative and collaborative projects implemented by Europa Cinemas Network members from the same country or at a European level.
In the foosteps of the 15 projects supported in 2021 for COLLABORATE TO INNOVATE first Call for applications, Europa Cinemas received 28 applications in 2022 and 13 exciting new projects representing 70 member cinemas have been selected as part of the second edition of the funding-scheme for a total support amount of almost €1 million (more about the all the supported projects here).
Coming from 16 European countries, these 13 projects represent the full diversity of the Network, with a growing number of international projects (5 in 2022, 2 in 2021), and cover a wide range of topics: film literacy and young audience development, European film circulation, technological innovation, digital marketing, enhanced cinema-going experience, as well as green practices and inclusion of disadvantaged audiences. Each individual project has set out its own measurable objectives and targets and their work will be analysed and shared across the Network for further development.
In 2023, the COLLABORATE TO INNOVATE budget will amount €1,5 Mio.
COLLABORATE TO INNOVATE particularly seeks to support projects which have the potential to inspire other exhibitors in the Network and beyond. Successful projects will need to offer evidence of potential impact on the film sector in areas such as the promotion, circulation and visibility of European films; audience development and young audience growth in particular; and enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of cinemas in their own markets and communities.
Among the main priorities of the scheme will be social inclusion and environmental sustainability.
Europa Cinemas' financial contribution will amount to a maximum of €100,000 per project and will not exceed:
• 70% of overall investments for projects submitted mainly by applicants from A and B countries (see guidelines), and where the main expenditure of the project will be in A and B countries.
• 80% of overall investments for projects submitted mainly by coordinators and partners from C and D countries.
The guidelines for the scheme were designed with the active support of Network members. They are available in English, French, Italian, Spanish and German. Application forms, including budget and mandate, need to be completed online.
The Call for applications is presently open and exclusive to members of the Network. COLLABORATE TO INNOVATE is a great opportunity to highlight the diversity, vitality and creativity of your work, projects and cinemas!
If you plan to implement new and original initiatives aiming at developing new audiences (particularly young ones), using new digital technologies, improving environmental sustainability, contributing to social cohesion within your structure or in your communities, etc., please go ahead and send us your application!
Application documents are to be duly filled in and submitted online before Tuesday 28th February, 2023 (7:00pm CET).
To support this year’s bids, Europa Cinemas will be hosting two online workshops which will help you shape your project bids and give them the best chance of success. These Zoom sessions will allow you to ask all your questions about the programme's Guidelines, the application process, the procedures and rules to follow.
IMPORTANT: to encourage maximum participation, two sessions are planned:
- Tuesday, January 17 at 11am (CET), with simultaneous translation in English, French and German
- Wednesday, January 18 at 11am (CET), with simultaneous translation in English, Italian, Spanish
(if a minimum number of participants is met for each language)

At Europa Cinemas 22nd Network Conference in Paris (1-4 Dec 2022), many COLLABORATE TO INNOVATE projects have been presented and highlighted during panels and workshops. We hope it will be a source of inspiration and replication when building your own projects.
You will find all live streams on our Youtube channel (workshop 1, workshop 2, workshop 4), as well as previous workshops from our Sevilla and Bologna Audience Development & Innovation Labs.
COLLABORATE TO INNOVATE is an exciting and important scheme, not just for the Europa Cinemas Network but for the film industry as a whole as we look beyond the Covid crisis. We look forward to your applications!
