2024, a very ‘loveable’ year
Our 'coups de cœur' (staff picks)
We were looking for 10, we ended up picking 12 (and many more...). As the year comes to an end, here is a round-up of the team's favourite films in 2024.
The exercise is somewhat hazardous and vain; the selection inevitably questionable, even frustrating (choosing means eliminating). Yet, the Europa Cinemas team was thrilled to take part in the retrospective game involved in compiling an annual hit list of protean cinematographic works.
It is a rather fair assessment to say that 2024 has been a year rich in bold cinematic proposals that question our morality. It's also perhaps the year of our most eclectic (although some films echo each other) and least 'Hollywood' short list (not a single US title in the top 12). Above all, this selection appears to be one of the most political and concerned with the tragic realities of our world, sailing from Iran to Ukraine via Syria, evoking the migratory crisis, timeless human barbarity and the threat of climate change. A cat narrowly missed out on THE top spot, but ultimately, Alain Guiraudie's pastoral comedy-thriller was (almost) unanimously acclaimed and thus prevailed!
