Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s MUSTANG wins Europa Cinemas Cannes Label

Cannes, May 22, 2015: Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s MUSTANG has won the Europa Cinemas Label as Best European film in the Directors’ Fortnight section, it was announced today by a jury of four exhibitors from the Network. 2015 marks the thirteenth time the Label has been awarded in Cannes.

MUSTANG will now receive the support of the Europa Cinemas Network, with additional promotion and incentives for exhibitors to extend the film’s run on screen.

The jury issued the following statement: “This is a very impressive debut feature – a well written, emotional story about five teenage orphan sisters and their struggles for liberty in Northern Turkey.  The young actresses drive the film with their remarkably energetic performances and Deniz Gamze Ergüven directs with an admirably light but sure touch. This is a look at Turkish society and attitudes towards women as well as arranged marriages, but it has relevance for us all.”

Sold internationally by Kinology, MUSTANG is a CG Cinema production, co-produced with Bam Film (Turkey), Vistamar Filmproduktion (Germany), Uhlandfilm (Germany) and the Doha Film Institute (Qatar).

Early summer. In a village in northern Turkey, Lale and her four sisters are walking home from school, playing innocently with some boys. The immorality of their play sets off a scandal that has unexpected consequences. The family home is progressively transformed into a prison ; instruction in homemaking replaces school and marriages start being arranged. The five sisters who share a common passion for freedom, find ways of getting around the constraints imposed on them.

Born in Ankara, Deniz Gamze Ergüven studied filmmaking at la Fémis after a MA in history in Johannesburg. Her graduation film Bir Damla Su was selected in many festivals (Cinéfondation, awarded at Locarno). Deniz co-wrote her first feature film Mustang with Alice Winocour and directed it in 2014.
