27 Times Cinema - The Portraits - Martin Koczan - Urania - Miskolc - Hungary

Could you introduce yourself and tell us who you are and what you do?

My name is Martin, I was born in Miskolc in 1988. The Hungarian member of the 27. I study sociology at the University of Miskolc.

How long have you been going to the cinema?

As a child I went to the cinema with my parents who introduced me to the love of films. We watched films quite often, five or six movies a year. They also had a huge variety of films in VHS and once a week we had an evening during which we watched a film. I do remember that the first one was The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. We still have the VHS : some time ago, we watched it with my 4 year-old brother. I could see the miracle in his eyes when we were watching it. But what I prefer is going to the cinema. There is nothing like that. The big screen, the sound and the smell of the projector.

Why do you like cinema?  Why do you prefer cinema to other media or to books, for example?

Once with a school group I could check the whole process of projecting images. That was the time when I felt in love with cinemas for a lifetime. From that time on I watched films with a new glance.  Not just enjoying them but thinking about the way they were made.
However I do like theatres as well. That is why I do like dramas and comedies.

Tell us what type of cinema or which kind of films you prefer? Which films are particularly important to you? What are your 3 favorite films?

I watch every type of films. It does not matter, what means a lot is the story.
I do not have favorite ones. I like so many films that is hard to choose. But I can mention Into the Wild with Emile Hirsch, The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.

What does European cinema represent for you? Do you feel European?

The European cinema represents me the union of people. There is a thing that everyone likes and it can bring us together. It does not matter where we are from or what language we speak, the only thing is that we love and watch films and it makes us happy. And we can learn from each other through movies. We can show how we live and what we like.
I do not travel a lot in Europe. But I feel that I am European because we also have film festivals where I can meet with foreign people and can speak with them. I can discuss or argue with them on forums.

Which cinema are you representing at 27 Times Cinema? What do you like most about this venue?

It is in the House of Arts / Mûvészetek Háza. There are 2 screening rooms: the Uránia and Béke. What I most like about this place is the team's tremendous work.  They are always smiling and often have a good word for the visitors. They host the Jameson Cinefest - Miskolc International Film Festival - which is a fantastic event in the daily life of Miskolc.
As a film-goer I like to watch as many films as I can in there.  I am doing it with my friends because together is much better than alone. After the film we usually have a refresher in the café and speak about the film. I mostly like the summer because there is a huge terrace with comfy chairs and it just a minute away from the screening room.
It will be the first time for me to take part in a film festival as a jury member. After watching a film I like having a conversation about it with my friends. We are telling our opinions to each other, discuss it, argue about it.
