On Monday 5 May 2008, European films will be celebrated at Cinémas du Palais in Créteil, France. There will be a preview screening of two feature films: Cherry Blossoms (Kirschblüten) by Doris Dörrie (Germany, 2007) which is to be released in France on 2 July 2008 (distributor: Jour2fête) and Reprise by Joachim Trier (Norway, 2006) which will be available to French audiences from 11 June (distributor: Malavida).
The evening will also provide an opportunity to screen the last two short films produced as part of the ‘Borders’ project which has been run by Frédéric Henry from Cinémas du Palais since 2004. One of the goals of the ‘Borders’ project is to develop European co-productions of short films made by around fifteen young people from across Europe. Based on long-term and detailed cooperation with the local education network, the project regularly involves European organisations, particularly members of the Europa Cinemas network such as Queen’s Film Theatre in Belfast, United Kingdom. This collaboration led to the production of Botanic Garden on the subject of Polish immigration to Belfast, which will be screened on 5 May. Members of the public will also be able to see Bermuda Dreieck, produced by students at Lycée Branly with Austrian and Hungarian partners, on the subject of immigration and illegal working. The next shoot will take place in Sarajevo in August 2008 and will involve 35 Europeans of eight different nationalities. In June 2009, seven European capitals are to participate in a joint project… Watch this space!
The Cinémas du Palais have just received the national label ‘2008 European Year of Intercultural Dialogue’ awarded by the Minister of Culture, which rewards ambitious work promoting the development of artistic and cultural exchanges between young Europeans and promoting the European films of today and of the future by raising awareness among new audiences.
