Karlovy Vary: Europa Cinemas Label goes to finnish film Frozen City

07/10

A jury made of 4 Europa Cinemas exhibitors awarded the Label to the film Frozen City by Aku Louhimies (Finland).

In 2006, Europa Cinemas has launched a new partnership with the 41st Karlovy Vary International Film Festival to award its Label to the best European film presented in the main competition programme and in the East of West section.

A jury made of 4 Europa Cinemas exhibitors (Ivo Andrle / Czech Republic, Kirsten Dalgaard / Denmark, Katrin Rajasaare / Estonia and Thomas Settje / Germany) awarded the Label to the film:

Frozen City by Aku Louhimies (Finland)
International Sales: Solar Films (www.solarfilms.com, markus.selin@solarfilms.com)

Frozen City is the new film from acclaimed Finnish director Aku Louhimies (Frozen Land). The jury issued the following statement about the winning film:  “The film tells the story of a marriage break-up in a classic formula. There is no winner in this fight. The director, however, does not attempt to provide the viewer to side with neither a character nor an obvious solution. The film takes on an almost documentary style to show the gradual increase of negative emotions. The aesthetic choice of the frozen and hostile city of Helsinki is an apt setting for the heavy atmosphere of the film.”

The film will now receive the invaluable support of extended theatrical exposure and additional promotion from the Europa Cinemas network and its exhibitors.

Founded in 1992, the Europa Cinemas network now consists of a remarkable 1562 screens in 664 cinemas in 365 cities in 59 countries. Europa Cinemas’ aim is to support the programming and visibility of European films outside their country of origin, and to foster initiatives aimed at encouraging younger audiences to develop their interest in European films and cultural diversity.
