WINTER BROTHERS by Hlynur Pálmason wins Europa Cinemas Locarno Label

Hlynur Pálmason’s first feature film WINTER BROTHERS from Denmark and Iceland has been awarded the Europa Cinemas Label as Best European Film at the 70th Locarno Film Festival. 2017 marks the fifth time the Europa Cinemas Label has been awarded in Locarno.

WINTER BROTHERS will now receive the support of the Europa Cinemas Network, with additional promotion and incentives for exhibitors to extend the film’s run on screen.

The jury issued the following statement: «We were very impressed by this first time director, by the inventive sound design and an usual take on brotherhood, outsiders and a male perspective. The setting in an isolated mining community was well realised and the film took us on an unexpected journey. We felt it was a breathe of fresh Scandic air!»

Synopsis: A brother odyssey set in a worker environment during a cold winter. We follow two brothers, their routines, habits, rituals and a violent feud that erupts between them and another family. A lack of love story, focusing on the younger brother Emil and his need for being loved and desired.

Hlynur Pálmason marks his directorial debut on the project and also wrote the screenplay. Born in Iceland in 1984, Hlynur Pálmason, a visual artist and filmmaker, studied at the Danish National Film School. His graduation short, A Painter (2013), won, among others, Best Short Film at Odense and Reykjavík while his next short, Seven Boats (2014) premiered at Toronto. Vinterbrødre (Winter Brothers, 2017) is his first feature.

WINTER BROTHERS is a Danish-Icelandic co-production between Masterplan Pictures and Join Motion Pictures. Julie Waltersdorph Hansen was a producer on the project and Per Damgaard Hansen was an executive producer.
