Uberto Pasolini's MACHAN wins Venice Europa Cinemas Label


Uberto Pasolini's MACHAN has won the Europa Cinemas Label as Best European film in the Giornate degli Autori/Venice Days section of the Venice Film Festival, it was announced today by the jury of four Europa Cinemas exhibitors - the fifth year the Label has been awarded in the section.

MACHAN will now receive the support of the Europa Cinemas exhibitors who commit themselves to extend the length of its run on screen and additional promotion across the network.

The Europa Cinemas jury of exhibitors consisted of Ana Cristina Santos (DCA, Dundee/UK); Mario Lorini (Garibaldi, Poggibonsi/Italy); Fredrik Jönsson (Folkets Bio, Lund/Sweden) and Alexander Syllaba (Cinema Paradiso, St. Pölten/Austria).

The Jury issued the following statement about the film, "Immigration is a very real issue in Europe today and this is an enjoyable, well written and well directed film that makes its point with humour and without lapsing into cheap sentimentality. We feel that this can attract and entertain a wide audience around Europe and contribute to discussions of this important subject."

Sold internationally by Beta Cinema , MACHAN is Pasolini's directorial debut and stars Dharmapriya Dias (Stanley), Gihan de Chickera (Manoj), Dharshan Dharmaraj (Suresh), Namal Jayasinghe (Vijith), Sujeewa Priyalal (Piyal), Dayadewa Edirisinghe (Naseem). The screenplay is by Ruwanthie de Chickera and Uberto Pasolini with cinematography by Stefano Falivene. A StudioUrania production, MACHAN is a co-production with Babelsberg Film GMBH, in association with Shakthi Film. Prasanna Vithanage is the producer.
