Director's Fortnight:THE SELFISH GIANT wins Cannes Europa Cinemas Label
UK's THE SELFISH GIANT directed by Clio Barnard has won the Europa Cinemas as Best European film in the Director’s Fortnight section, it was announced today by a jury of four exhibitors from the network. 2013 marks the tenth time the Label has been awarded in Cannes.
THE SELFISH GIANT will now receive the support of the Europa Cinemas Network, with additional promotion and incentives for exhibitors to extend the film’s run on screen.
The jury issued the following statement:
“THE SELFISH GIANT was a unanimous decision for us. A supremely well judged film – delicate, powerfully emotional, and brilliantly acted with remarkable editing and photography. It is a tough subject but there is hope in this moving story of the friendship between two boys. A very successful contemporary update of the Oscar Wilde fairy story, we feel that that this film will be especially useful for engaging younger audiences – a worthy winner of the Label, therefore.”
THE SELFISH GIANT, inspired by Oscar Wilde’s story, is about 13 year old Arbor and his best friend Swifty. Excluded from school and outsiders in their own neighbourhood, the two boys meet Kitten, a local scrapdealer. They begin to collect scrap metal for him using a horse and a cart. Swifty has a natural gift with horses while Arbor imitates Kitten, keen to impress him and make some money. However, Kitten favours Swifty, leaving Arbor feeling hurt and excluded, driving a wedge between the boys.
THE SELFISH GIANT is Clio Barnard’s second feature, her first was The Arbor, an experimental documentary about Bradford playwright Andrea Dunbar. It achieved huge critical success on its release in 2010 and received numerous awards including The Douglas Hickox Award at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs).
Clio Barnard is both the director and the screenwriter. Tracy O’Riordan produced the film with Katherine Butler and Lizzie Francke as Executive Producers. The film is a BFI and Film4 presentation of a Moonspun Films production.
Mike Eley is the Director of Photography; Sound Design is by Tim Barker; the Editor is Nick Fenton, and Production Designer Helen Scott. Story development is by Lila Rawlings. The cast includes Conner Chapman, Shaun Thomas, Sean Gilder, Lorraine Ashbourne, Ian Burfield, Steve Evets and Siobhan Finneran.
