BLACKBOARD wins Europa Cinemas Label at Locarno!
Swiss documentary BLACKBOARD directed by Yves Yersin has won the Europa Cinemas Label as Best European film at Festival del Film Locarno (Concorso Internazionale). It was announced today by a jury of four exhibitors from the network. It is the first time the Label has been awarded in Locarno.
The four Network exhibitors in this year’s jury were:
MARY NAZARI - Pioner Cinema - MOSCOW (Russia); LUZ DELGADO - Cines Van Dyck - SALAMANCA (Spain); ROD WHITE - Filmhouse - EDINBURGH (United Kingdom); HENK CAMPING - Member of the Europa Cinemas Board of Directors (The Netherlands).
BLACKBOARD will now receive the support of the Europa Cinemas Network, with additional promotion and incentives for exhibitors to extend the film’s run on screen.
The jury said about the film: “TABLEAU NOIR is a moving and illuminating film with considerable audience appeal. Yves Yersin has created a work perfectly, and unobtrusively, in tune with his subject and his subject’s own working methods, making the viewer themselves pupils in this extraordinary classroom; whilst eloquently highlighting what may be being lost in the name of progress."
BLACKBOARD plunges spectators into an intimate and inaccessible microcosm of an elementary school located in a hamlet where there are only five houses at 1153 meters in the Jura region. The feature film chronicles life at the school over a year, focusing on the pupils, aged six to twelve, who share the same class, along with their successes and failures - a dramatic story with universal appeal.
Since 1964 Yves Yersin has worked as director, set designer, editor, cameraman and independent producer. He directed several features films (cinema and TV) such as LES PETITES FUGUES presented in the official Selection at Cannes in 1980 and won the Grand Jury Prize at Locarno Film Festival.
BLACKBOARD will be released on November 20th in French-speaking part of Switzerland.
