2011 Session
Competing for attention & success Educating through creativity
Every year, since 2005, a Young Audience Seminar has been organized by Europa Cinemas during the Il Cinema Ritrovato festival located at the Cineteca di Bologna.
This year, it will take place from Saturday the 25th of June until Wednesday the 29th of June 2011. Conducted by the film historian Ian Christie (Vice-President of Europa Cinemas and professor in London), and run by Madeleine Probst (Watershed Media Centre, Bristol) and Simon Ward (Independent Cinema Office, London), the theme will be:
"Competing for attention & success Educating through creativity"
In an age of digital democratisation, where many people no longer want to be passive consumers, how can links be made between creativity, audience development and film education? With so many attractions competing for attention, how can network cinemas think creatively to (re)position their cultural offer? How can they tap into alternative content, new platforms and 'event' cinema to attract new audiences?
We will reflect on what cinemas mean in their local environment and the global context in which they operate: how is it changing, and how can we broaden, and deepen the dialogue with our audiences? We will look at the shift in how people, in particular younger generations make decisions about culture and film. How do they spend their time, what are their interests, and how can these link to their engagement with cinema?
