San Sebastian 2005: Claude Miller and Claude-Eric Poiroux awarded

European Personality of the Year Award
For the intellectual enrichment of the public

Yesterday Mikel Olaciregui, Director of Zinemaldia, presented the European Personality of the Year Award to Claude Miller and Claude-Eric Poiroux. This was a reward for the work they have achieved with the management of Europa Cinemas, an organization which devotes itself to increasing the circulation of European films, not just within the European Union but also in Latin American and Mediterranean countries.
Olaciregui described the first steps of an association which started off with 30 film theatres and today has 600 cinemas, with nearly 1420 screens.
Claude Miller, President of Europa Cinemas and member of the Festival's official jury, declared that the enthusiasm which caused him to join this organization still fires him today: 'We do not seek to support the cinema for the enrichment of the film industry but for the elevation and intellectual enrichment of the public,' he stated.
Claude-Eric Poiroux insisted on dedicating the prize to the Festival, to cinemas, to the MEDIA programme and to the French cinematographic organization, CNC. He also recalled that cinema exists thanks to two factors: the audience who fills the theatres day after day and festivals which meticulously promote it.
According to him, 600 to 800 films are currently produced each year in Europe. 'Our objective is to achieve an increase in the number of films and that these reach more viewers.'
