Europa Cinemas is back from Bologna

“Competing for attention & educating through creativity” this was the theme of the 2011 Young Audience Seminar which ended last 29th June. Audience renewal and the use of social networks were amongst the wide range of subjects covered.  26 participants from 17 difference countries attended the seminar which took place in Bologna, as part of the Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival.

At a time when the majority of films are watched on TV, and teenagers increasingly prefer DVDs and internet downloads, cinemas stand against stiff competition. Presentations on Future Shorts and Secret Cinema made us realise that ‘event’ cinema screenings are a good way to deepen the dialogue between the cinema and its public.

Cinemadivino combines cinematic and gastronomic experiences at its open-air screenings held in Italian vineyards.
Marketing in the cultural domain is evolving, with a tendency to focus increasingly on the public. Seminar participants were able to exchange tips on marketing strategies and their use of social networks, as well as compare the websites of their respective cinemas.

Another guest: Angela English from Birkbeck College, University of London, came to present her research on reminiscence.   She organises archive screenings as a way of encouraging the use of memory and encouraging inter-generational exchanges.

The sneak preview presentation of long extracts from Mark Cousin’s documentary The Story of Cinema was another of the Seminar’s highlights. The director’s enthusiasm for cinema of the past was certainly contagious and appropriate since it is a subject that is discussed every year.
And to complement their meditation on the film canon, the participants also attended spectacular open-air screenings in Bologna’s Piazza Maggiore.

This year Il Cinema Ritrovato’s opening films were Méliès’ Le voyage dans la lune (A Trip to the Moon, 1902) and Murnau’s Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922).
